Alfie Shane Hillman

Alfie’s Story

“Alfie is the happiest baby ever , he wakes up smiling and smiles all day and even goes to bed with a smile on his face.”

Alfie Shane Hillman, Mosaic Trisomy 18, 3/5/13, Ebbw Vale, Gwent, Wales, UK

Alfie Shane Hillman T18M 14mosAlfie was born at 28 weeks and 6 days and weighed 1lb 3 oz and delivered by c-section .   We were informed that if he survived birth he might only survive for three minutes and if he did survive that he would have no quality of life because t18 babies are labelled incompatible with life.

And was asked did we want to terminate.  We told them Alfie deserves a chance at life  So all the doctors and nurses did their best to make sure Alfie survived .

Alfie has conquered many obstacles standing in his way .  He was on oxygen for five months but now is oxygen free and bottle fed and eats puréed baby foods.  And he is doing everything they said he might not be able to do (sit up, crawl, stand up ) and is living his life to the fullest .

He has regular physiotherapy and has a fantastic child development officer and has to see the speech and language therapy team to help him with his swallowing because he cannot handle any lumps without choking and vomiting .

Alfie is the happiest baby ever , he wakes up smiling and smiles all day and even goes to bed with a smile on his face .

To date he is the only t18 baby alive in Wales uk.

Alfie is now 16 months old
