The following paper is an interesting article published recently in The CRISPR Journal. The main author, Erika Snure Beckman, performed this work for a Master’s degree while a genetic counseling student at Stanford University. She and her colleagues analyzed the views of parents of persons with trisomy 21, trisomy 18, and trisomy 13 syndromes toward the new gene-editing technologies.

The parents of individuals with trisomies 18 and 13 were recruited through SOFT and made up the majority of participants (17 of 27). The authors found that the parents  have “unique concerns that may differ from the broader discourse”.  Please take the time to read about the views toward this technology, now on the forefront of human genetics discourse.

Gene-editing technologies, including CRISPR, were featured recently on the PBS special, The Gene, an Intimate History, produced by Ken Burns. This 2-part series is also worth the 4 hours to watch if you can.
