Akaiya Davis, Trisomy 18, 9/4/2002
Kaiya has taught our family some pretty amazing things, and has been an inspiration to many.
Akaiya was born September 4th 2002. I had had a fairly uneventful pregnancy, followed by an emergency c-section. Kaiya was 5lbs 1oz and 18 inches. Her small size was a big surprise to the doctor and provided the first clue that something was going on. Kaiya was born at a small hospital that didn’t even have a NICU so she was kept in the nursery for observation. Her 2nd day there she started having spells of apnea so she was transferred to a larger hospital with a NICU. We found out that Akaiya had Trisomy 18 2 weeks after she was born. She spent one month in the NICU and it was a rollercoaster ride! We were told daily that she was not going to survive, but the lil monster had plans of her own. We took Kaiya home and waited for some sort of traumatic event – and waited – and waited…Kaiya grew slowly, but she grew – and we slowly began to realize that she might be here for awhile.
Kaiya is a sassy, opinionated, happy, LOUD little girl. She absolutely loves people interacting with her, and she loves to flirt She goes to school and loves being with all of the kids. Kaiya communicates by tone of voice, facial expression, and gestures. She may not be able to use words, but she definitely gets her point across.
Kaiya has taught our family some pretty amazing things, and has been an inspiration to many. We love her and cherish every day that we get to share giving her snuggles and hearing her giggles!
