A powerful short film about one family’s love, courage, and life with Trisomy 13.
At SOFT, we are continually moved by stories that reflect the strength, love, and complexity of parenting a child with Trisomy 13, Trisomy 18, or related chromosomal and genetic conditions. These stories remind us that families facing a life-limiting diagnosis are not defined by it—they are defined by their love, advocacy, and the way they find beauty in every moment.
Recently, we were honored to connect with Louise Kinross, editor of BLOOM at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. Louise shared an extraordinary short film from their acclaimed video series A Family Like Mine, which highlights families raising children with disabilities and complex medical needs.
In this episode, Living in the Moment with Bree, we meet Bree, a bright and spirited four-year-old with Trisomy 13. Her parents speak with honesty, humor, and tenderness about what life looks like in their home—how they’ve learned to adapt, to slow down, and to find joy in the simplest moments.
“We’ve learned to live in the moment,” Bree’s parents share, capturing a truth that resonates deeply with so many SOFT families.
Through candid interviews and gentle visual storytelling, the film reveals the realities of raising a medically fragile child—the constant balancing of medical care and family life, the uncertainty that comes with every hospital visit, and the quiet triumphs that remind parents just how strong they’ve become. It is not only a story about Trisomy 13; it is a universal story about hope, patience, and the love that sustains families through every challenge.
Holland Bloorview’s A Family Like Mine series has gained national recognition for its compassionate portrayal of families who are often underrepresented in mainstream media. By centering the voices of parents, the series helps reshape how the world sees disability—emphasizing dignity, joy, and the extraordinary value of every life.
For families in the Trisomy community, stories like Bree’s are deeply affirming. They remind new parents receiving a diagnosis that they are not alone and that their child’s life—no matter its medical complexity—can be filled with meaning, laughter, and love. For those just beginning this journey, SOFT provides a range of helpful resources, including books and materials for new and expectant parents that offer insight, comfort, and practical guidance.
At SOFT, we believe that storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to build understanding and compassion. Each time a family like Bree’s opens their hearts and invites us in, they help others feel seen, understood, and supported. These moments of connection strengthen the bonds between parents, professionals, and advocates working to ensure that every child is valued and loved.
Stories like Living in the Moment with Bree also reflect the mission that guides everything we do at SOFT—to empower families through information, peer connection, and compassionate support. Whether families are navigating a new diagnosis, caring for a medically complex child, or coping with loss, our community is here to walk beside them with empathy and understanding.
We are deeply grateful to Holland Bloorview for allowing us to share this remarkable story with our community. Their work continues to set a standard for inclusive storytelling—one that honors both the challenges and the beauty of life with disability.
We invite you to take a few minutes to watch Bree’s story and share it with others who might find comfort or inspiration in her family’s journey.
