What is something unique and special about your child with trisomy that you wish more people knew?
Akaiya has a wicked sense of humor. She likes to play tricks on people. Akaiya also loves chaos – the more people, noise and movement the better for her.
Why do you believe raising awareness about trisomy conditions is important, and how can others make a difference?
Raising awareness about trisomy conditions is incredibly important because people often fear what they don’t understand. When something seems different or unfamiliar, it’s easy for misconceptions and judgments to take hold. I’ve seen firsthand how those fears can create unnecessary barriers for individuals with trisomy and their families. But the beautiful thing is, once people have the opportunity to learn, connect, and see the joy and resilience in these individuals, that fear starts to fade.
Awareness brings understanding, and understanding fosters acceptance. By sharing stories, celebrating milestones, and highlighting the unique strengths of those with trisomy, we create a world that’s more inclusive and compassionate. Simple actions like attending events, supporting organizations like SOFT, or even just having conversations can make a real difference. Every bit of exposure chips away at fear and builds a community where all people are valued and celebrated.
It’s not just about raising awareness — it’s about opening hearts and minds. And when that happens, the world becomes a much better place for everyone.
During Trisomy Awareness Month, what message would you like to share with the world about your family’s journey and the trisomy community?
My daughter Akaiya has trisomy 18, and while we didn’t know her diagnosis before she was born, she has completely transformed my life in ways I never could have imagined. She’s been my greatest teacher — showing me the depth of unconditional love, the power of resilience, and the beauty in every moment.
Because of Akaiya, I found my passion as an educator and an advocate for children with disabilities. She’s not only shaped the way I approach my career but also how I parent her siblings, who also have disabilities. She’s given me a deeper understanding of patience, joy, and what it truly means to celebrate every victory, no matter how small.
Through Akaiya, I also found the incredible SOFT community. Connecting with other families who understand the challenges and triumphs of raising a child with trisomy has been a lifeline. The support, encouragement, and friendships we’ve built are a constant reminder that we’re never alone on this journey.
My message to the world is this: Don’t be afraid of what’s different. Embrace it. There is so much beauty in the unexpected, and so much strength in the stories of those who face life with courage and determination. The trisomy community is filled with joy, love, and resilience — and it’s a privilege to be part of it. Akaiya has taught me that every life has value and purpose, and I’m endlessly grateful for the lessons she continues to share with us all.
